In the fashion industry, the 1980s are regarded as a very significant time for leggings. This trend largely came as fashion followed the fitness craze that was taking place.
The attraction of leggings as a workout piece soon became incorporated into every day outfits. Whilst the leggings worn for exercise were often Lycra material, the ones worn on a day to day basis were often cotton like we see now.
The moto for leggings soon became that they could go with anything. From being worn with skirts and dresses to worn under oversized t-shirts, they were everywhere. This was a trend that Sarah, who is pictured above, followed during the 80s.
"I loved wearing leggings throughout my twenties. They were so comfy yet so on trend - all of the girls used to wear them.
"We either used to wear them with skirts and just alone with a t-shirt as you can see in this photo. The blue ones were one of my most worn pairs. They were really in your face but I loved wearing them with plain t-shirts. I used to cut the top of the t-shirts off, which were usually men's, to make it somewhat off the shoulder, too - that was another craze."
"I remember Sandy from the film Grease being an inspiration of mine. I loved the black shiny leggings that she wore and I know my friends and I all tried to copy her - that's probably where it all started."

Although leggings weren't as much of a trend in the 90s due to the popularity of flares and bootcut bottoms, they made their return in the noughties - usually cropped and under denim skirts. Today, however, their just as popular as the 80s with them being worn for casual wear or variations made out of leather for a more stylish outfit.
