Flashback: Sarah
Here is a collection of photograph's of my mum, Sarah, when she was in her twenties, including one from when she was pregnant with me! Flannel shirts, denim jackets and dungarees are all trends that have never really died. There have been times in the last 30 years since these photos were taken, where they might not have been as popular as other trends, but you still see people wearing all three items even now, in 2017.
The flannel shirt, typically associated with 1990's grunge, was a go to for my mum before I was born. Travelling around Israel, she carried this shirt with her everywhere for the evenings when the temperatures plummeted. Bands like Nirvana can be thanked for the popularity of flannel shirts, as teens at the time were heavily influenced by their idols and their 'grungey' styles. It was only up until the 1950's that they were associated with lumberjacks, but now you still get some lighthearted comments if you team a flannel shirt with denim jeans.
The denim jacket is also a staple in a lot of both men and women's wardrobes. It's perfect for finishing off any outfit and is a must for layering during those transitional months. Levi's became increasingly popular during the 1960's and 1970's when the hippie movement came about. Everyone was obsessed with denim, including my mum.
The photo above is another example of the denim craze never dying. This was taken in 1996, the year of my birth, and my mum's outfit is no different to someone you'd pass in the street today. There's that famous saying which Sarah loves to say 'fashion always comes back around' and in this case, she's right.
The dungaree, arguably another outfit suitable for a lumberjack, was a 1970's fashion staple and is now, very much back in fashion. The appeal of dungarees is clear to see when they come in so many different styles, colours and shapes so your outfit is always different!
